Pacific Beach High School students are taking their construction skills beyond the classroom and into the community. Partnering with Friends of SLO City Dog Parks, students in the PBHS Construction 1 and 2 classes are building agility and obstacle equipment for the Laguna Lake Dog Park. Their handcrafted A-frames, dog walks, and three-tiered platforms will soon become a fun and lasting part of the park’s newly renovated space.
For these students, the project is about more than saws, drills, and blueprints. It’s about learning by doing – measuring, cutting, and assembling with precision, while mastering techniques like painting, staining, and securing support structures built to last. From selecting the right fasteners to applying professional-grade painting and staining techniques, every step reinforces practical skills they can carry into future careers.
This effort comes as part of a larger renovation project led by the City of San Luis Obispo Parks & Open Space Department, which is set to reveal the upgrades at Laguna Lake Dog Park on May 2nd. With upgraded fencing, improved accessibility, fresh landscaping, and new amenities, the park is getting a well-deserved refresh. And thanks to the hard work of PBHS students, the community’s four-legged friends will have a brand-new agility area to explore – built not just with skill but with heart.
