Number of recognized local schools has nearly tripled since 2019, growing from 12 schools in three local educational agencies to 35 schools across eight
San Luis Obispo County, CA – August 27, 2026 – Thirty-five schools across San Luis Obispo County have earned 2026 California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) recognition, marking a significant increase in the number of local schools recognized statewide for creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for students.
The number of recognized schools has grown from 12 across three local educational agencies in 2019 to 35 across eight in 2026. The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education’s Educational Support Services team provides PBIS implementation training and coaching to schools throughout the county.
California PBIS recognition is awarded to schools that demonstrate strong, consistent implementation of practices that support student success. Schools are evaluated on areas including teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors, intervening early, monitoring student progress, and using data to continually improve support.
For local students, that means more schools across the county are putting proven systems in place to help students feel supported, understand expectations and get the help they need to succeed academically, socially and behaviorally.
This year, five San Luis Obispo County schools earned Platinum recognition, the highest level awarded, while 15 earned Gold, 11 earned Silver and four earned Bronze.
“State recognition at this scale reflects the consistency and care educators are bringing to this work across San Luis Obispo County,” said Dr. James Brescia, San Luis Obispo County Superintendent of Schools. “These schools are building environments where students feel supported, expectations are clear, and help is available when they need it.”
Recognized schools will be honored at the annual California PBIS conference in Sacramento this fall.
